The adult beverage global market is about $1,500 Billion. The US market counts for $250 Billion alone. The US market for alcoholic beverage is regulated by the Three Tier system. It was set up after the prohibition. The three tiers are the importers or producers, the distributors and the retailers. This system forces importers and producers to sell first to distributors. Distributors are then the only ones authorized to sell to retailers. The only exception to that rule is the state of Washington. In some other states, the state itself control part or all of the 3 tiers.

For those in the wines & spirits industry, New York is an important market for several reasons. New York is the third largest market for spirits and wines nationally, just behind California and Florida. As it is an ideal location for the import of wines from France, Spain, Italy, Germany and the rest of Europe, it occupies an important headquarters for numerous alcohol importers and distributors.
Additionally, the importance of the New York market for serving distribution channels all over the northeast, the city attracts major offices for multinational conglomerates such as Anheuser-Busch (which has a number of wines and spirits brands in its portfolio) and Diageo (owner of such prominent brands as Smirnoff, Johnnie Walker, Captain Morgan, Tanqueray and others).
The State of New York relies on alcohol sales to generate over $250 million dollars in tax revenue. Restaurants in New York generated a sales of over $50 billion dollars in 2018, with alcohol sales accounting for a significant portion of that spend.
Wines and spirits in New York City restaurants have traditionally been sold at a high mark-up thanks to the high rents in the area and leading to a unique market landscape. Sommeliers and restaurants look for unique bottles that are not typically sold in retail establishments. Because of tourist spend, even well-known independent restaurants like Smith & Wollensky, the Smith and Carmine’s can gross upwards of $15 million dollars a year.
California wine sales hit $35 billion dollars in 2017, and year over year growth has continued to be strong. California is the largest consumer of wines and spirits in the US, and is also the country’s largest producer of wine. 90% of the wine produced in the US is produced in California, and California would rank fourth in the world in terms of wine production if it were its own country.
E. and J. Gallo bills itself as “the largest winery in the world,” and started in a Modesto, California shed in the 1930s is now worth nearly $10 billion dollars. Other major companies include Constellation Brands (home of Mondavi and Woodbridge), Trinchero and The Wine Group.
As a strong market for wines and spirits, the bulk of sales occur in restaurants, bars and retail establishments. Wines and spirits in California can be sold in grocery stores, separating it from the laws in New York state, which are much more restrictive. Increasingly lucrative in recent years have become winery tours and case sales straight from winery to consumer.
Florida is an incredibly important market for wines and spirits producers, distributors, importers and wholesalers. This is because Florida is the second biggest consumer of alcohol in the nation (behind California) and because of the advantageous position of the state in terms of alcohol imports of wine, rum, gin, whiskey and other spirits from both Europe and the Carribean.
With a large hospitality and recreation industry, Florida welcomes millions of tourists each year to theme parks like Disneyland and SeaWorld. Additionally, Florida is a hub of cruise ship travel, and is a major link between Europe, the United States and the Carribean and Latin and South America.
In addition to hosting major import and distribution efforts, Florida also has a growing craft distillery and brewery scene, thanks in part to a business-friendly climate for wine and spirit producers.
Major companies in the area include Wineco Corp., McNeese Distributing, Forza Wine Imports, The Winebow Group, Morgan Wine & Spirits Distributors, Breakthru Beverage Group, Global Wines llC, Opici Wine Company and Shaw Ross International Importers.
